CHAIR’S CORNER
Chair’s Corner—May 2012
At our last ASQ meeting, I had the pleasure
of sharing my table with some fellow members of ASQ who have been past
members / leaders of our chapter and we discussed how the face of quality
has changed in the past 20 years.
When I first started with ASQ in 1993, ISO 9000 was becoming huge in
the manufacturing sector.
ASQ-Southern Jersey section meetings had 30-50 people attending each month.
Since then we have all seen the changes in the “face of quality.”
Where 20 years ago, quality was all the buzz in manufacturing, it now
seems to be the buzz in the healthcare industry.
In thinking about this change, my first
thought was, “Wow, this industry should have been the first to implement
quality systems, not the last!”
I can understand, though, that it’s much easier to deal with the inanimate
objects in manufacturing, than it is with the people issues in healthcare.
At one of our dinner meetings this year, the subject was
Healthcare: A Summary of Continuous Improvements,
presented by Carmen Rodriguez, a
Black Belt working for the Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
One part of her discussion talked about how the Healthcare Reform Act
is changing how we collect data in the healthcare field.
I had never really thought about it and had just assumed that there
was a central database for healthcare information readily available to
doctors all over the country.
Intellectually speaking, it should be!
But we all know that part of your health care prognosis depends on
where you live. If you have
cancer and live in Boston, your chances of survival are much better than
someone who lives in Wyoming, just based on the medical care available in
your area. With the Health Care
Reform Act, standard data will start to be collected anonymously on patient
treatment and prevention of disease.
This data will eventually be able to be used by a doctor Wyoming to
provide the same treatment as someone in Boston with the same symptoms!
Ten years from now, I believe we will have seen a huge turn-around in
the medical field just from the simple process of collecting data.
Those of us in
the field know how important data collection is.
Improvement can’t be measured without a baseline starting point.
Finally, we will be able to trust that the doctors treating us have
the best, most current data available, no matter where you live!

Omnex is proud
to sponsor the ASQ 801 Columbus, Ohio for the following live dinner meeting.
Presentation:
In today’s world of quality surrounded by electronic devices with computers,
notebooks, tabulates and smart phones is there still a need for a “toolbox”
of quality tools? What tools should be in your toolbox, and can you use
them, on the fly, without an electronic assistant. The answer is yes, and we
should all have as many tools in our toolbox as possible. The “Seven Basic
Tools of Quality” have been around for decades and they are still useful.
How can you adapt them and use them in an electronic medium or just with a
pencil and paper? We’ll try to answer those questions and give you several
ways to decide when and what tool(s) to use for which problem. We’ll try to
give you some electronic software tools that also work and have a reasonable
price.

Request from the Chair of

I am writing to you to solicit your help in publicizing the Rocky Mountain
Quality conference. This is a conference that has a proud 33 year history.
This year we expect over 500 participants from all over the nation
representing ASQ sections as well as Universities and companies committed to
quality. This conference is partially funded by the Special projects
committee of
ASQ national. I would very much appreciate it if you could mention this
in your news letter and or your web site so that any of your members who are
interested may register. We also have several sponsorship opportunities
available. I have included a screen shot of the asqdenver.org that has all
the detailed information relative to the conference.
Thank you for your help.

Meet Your Regional Councilor
Alice Krumenaker
FD&C Regional Councilor
Region 3B
As members of ASQ, you likely are also a member of at least one division,
which may possibly be the Food, Drug and Cosmetics Division.
What you may not know, is that there is a link between the local
sections and the Food, Drug and Cosmetics Division. There is a group called
Regional Councilors who serve as liaisons between the FD&C Division and the
various ASQ sections.
In some cases, one Regional Councilor may cover a large geographic area,
while in densely populated areas two or more Regional Councilors may be
located in a small geographic location.
In the West and Mid-West sections of the country, Regional
Councilors, work very closely with Discussion Groups by identifying topics
to be covered and participating in organizing and running the sessions.
In Canada, Regional Councilors are hosting breakfast discussion
meetings and work to build the presence of ASQ across the country.
Regional Councilors are involved in other projects, including the creation
of an ISO standard for new drug research. Other projects under consideration
are reviewing and commenting on regulations that are up for revision, and
creating a group of subject matter experts on quality topics to present at
conferences.
I have had the privilege of being the Regional Councilor for Region 3B
(Northern New Jersey) since 2009, but I am also providing support to other
local areas. I am a Senior member of Section #307, Princeton.
As a Regional Councilor, I am a member of the team that is developing
the new drug ISO standard. I am here to answer your questions about the
Food, Drug and Chemical Division, to assist you with issues involving ASQ
headquarters, or providing support in any way I can.
My professional experience is varied, ranging from analytical chemist to
quality systems manager and I have been employed in the personal care
product, medical device, human pharmaceutical and animal health fields.
Currently, I am the R&D QA Manager for CorePharma in Middlesex, NJ.
In addition, I have had articles published in the Journal of GxP Compliance
and the Journal of Validation Technology based on ASQ’s Certified
Pharmaceutical GMP Professional (CPGP) Body of Knowledge.
Your suggestions, questions or comments are always welcome and I am looking
for new ways that your Section and the FD&C Division may work together.
You may contact me at
a.krumenaker@gmail.com. I am looking forward to hearing from you.
